Chocolate is better than doughnuts for a HOLE lot of reasons.                                         Teach your kids not to eat chocolate.  You don't need the competition.                                         Celebrate diversity!  Eat white chocolate. Eat milk chocolate. Eat dark chocolate.                                        Never trust anyone who can eat only half of a chocolate bar.                                         No animals were killed to make chocolate.

from NPR's "Climate Connections" series, played 11/19/07

In One Study, a Heart Benefit for Chocolate - The New York Times: In a study that will provide comfort to chocoholics everywhere, researchers in Sweden have found evidence that people who eat chocolate have increased survival rates after a heart attack — and it may be that the more they eat, the better.

Chocolate in moderation may be good for you!
There is a widespread belief that anything which tastes good must be bad for you. However, this 1998 article from the British Medical Journal challenges that! They followed a cohort of Harvard alumni for five years and found that those who ate candy were likely to live significantly longer than non-consumers. Mortality was lowest in those who consumed candy 1-3 times a month and rose in more frequent consumers. The authors propose the antioxidant properties of chocolate as a plausible explanation for the effect.

CHOCOLATE HAS BENEFICIAL CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECTS: WE KNEW THIS, BUT FOR YOU NON-BELIEVERS... A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association concluded that "A calorie-balanced increase in consumption of dark chocolate may favorably affect BP in previously untreated elderly hypertensive individuals." Dark Chocolate Improves Endothelial Function in Healthy Adults:
Published on Medscape:
Flavonoid-rich dark chocolate improves endothelial function and is associated with increased plasma epicatechin concentrations in healthy adults, according to the results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the June issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition  2004;23:197-204.

Flavonoid-Rich Dark Chocolate Improves Endothelial Function:

Dark chocolate derived from the plant (Theobroma cacao) is a rich source of flavonoids. Cardioprotective effects including antioxidant properties, inhibition of platelet activity, and activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase have been ascribed to the cocoa flavonoids. I n a randomized double blind, placebo trial, recently published in  Journal of the American College of Nutrition, (Vol. 23, No. 3, 197-204, 2004), Engler et all conclude that "This is the first clinical trial to demonstrate improved endothelial function in healthy adults following short-term consumption of flavonoid-rich dark chocolate.....Our findings suggest a possible cardioprotective effect by flavonoid-rich chocolate, independent of changes in measures of oxidative stress and lipid profiles." Does chocolate have cardiovascular benefits?

READ THE EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER FROM THE JOURNAL OF FAMILY PRACTICE (HERE) ..... Based on available evidence, it appears that, YES, EATING CHOCOLATE REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE which is of course very important in reducing risk of developing cardio-vascular disease. In the lingo of medical evidence, this evidence is considered to have a “strength of recommendation (SOR) B” meaning that there are limitations to studies done so far on the subject. (A lot of what is routine medical practice is based on opinion only or much weaker or even absent evidence. So SOR B, while not optimal, is not bad.) For example, no studies, however, have evaluated the long-term cardiovascular effects of chocolate. But, it is clearly feasible since chocolate contains high levels of flavonol and a diet rich in flavonoids is associated with reduced death rates from coronary heart disease (also a SOR: B)

So, take your blood pressure medicine and some chocolate every day!

Frequent Chocolate Consumption Linked to Lower BMI

A recent study in the Archives of Internal Medicine showed that frequent chocolate consumption was associated with lower body mass index (BMI), even when adjusting for calorie intake, saturated fat intake, and mood. How 'bout that chocolate lovers!
